In mid-December 2017 New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law a requirement that nurses earn a BSN within 10 years of initial licensure. A decision that affects all nurses throughout the nation.

I offer my answer.

[Warning, this was a YouTube live broadcast. The video is almost an hour long, so have a seat.]

How does a nurse choose a specialty?

How does a nurse know where to go?? A question that all nurses have to (eventually) answer. In fact, some may have to answer this question more than once! From the moment you leaned into this career, we’ve heard recommendations from every aspect of our profession. Where do you start?

Here are some things I think about when choosing a specialty area of focus:

  • What do you not want to do?
    • Based on personal opinion about yourself
    • Based on personal experience
    • Do NOT base this on other opinions
  • Is there an ah-hah moment?
  • You really may just have to gamble
  • Create a Pros and Cons list

Whatever your decision, give it 18 months minimum. Get through the honeymoon period of your new job.

Does the TEAS exam change every year?

Are there different versions of this standardized entrance exam?

More on the TEAS exam from our nurse friend Brittney Wilson “The Nerdy Nurse”–> HERE

I’ll admit it, I didn’t even know what the TEAS exam was until I did my research. Back in my day, ATI had just been created! (Yes, I’m old)

Until next time…
